IFTA Fuel Tax Filing

Compliance Made Easy: Focus on Driving with Johnson DOT Services

Do you need IFTA stickers for your truck? Don't let complex paperwork keep you off the road. Johnson DOT Services specializes in handling the intricate filing and reporting requirements for your trucking business, ensuring you remain 100% compliant while you focus on what you do best: driving.

International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a simplified system for reporting and paying motor fuel taxes (diesel, gasoline, etc.) to all member jurisdictions (48 contiguous US states and 10 Canadian provinces).

IFTA jurisdictions (states) audit at least 3% of their accounts per year. To avoid fines and interest accurate records must be maintained.

IFTA Vehicle Qualification

A motor vehicle is considered a Qualified Motor Vehicle (QMV) and must report IFTA mileage quarterly if it is used, designed, or maintained for the transportation of persons or property and meets any of the following criteria:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds.

  • Has two axles and a registered weight over 26,000 pounds.

  • Has three or more axles regardless of weight.

  • Has a combined weight exceeding 26,000 pounds (when used in combination with a trailer).

IFTA Filing dates

  • Q1: Due April 30th

  • Q2: Due July 31st

  • Q3: Due October 31st

  • Q4: Due January 31st

We bill per hour to complete these filings. Carriers must collect/maintain accurate record of their mileage and fuel receipts.

State-Specific Weight-Distance Taxes (WDTs)

Beyond IFTA, several states impose a separate Highway Use Tax (HUT) or Weight-Distance Tax (WDT) based on the vehicle's weight and the specific mileage traveled within their borders. These taxes are filed in addition to your IFTA report.

Johnson DOT Services will handle all filing and renewals for these complex state permits and reports:

  • NY HUT (New York Highway Use Tax)

  • NM WDT (New Mexico Weight Distance Tax)

  • KYU (Kentucky Weight Distance Tax)

  • OR Monthly Mileage Reports (Oregon Weight-Mile Tax)

  • CT Monthly Mileage Reports (Connecticut Highway Use Fee/Tax)

We ensure you have the correct decals, permits, and ID numbers (like the KYU account) and that all required quarterly and monthly reports are submitted accurately and on time, preventing costly fines and operational delays.
